WHKY | Hurricanes with important victories over UNB on road this weekend

It was two victories that could prove to be exactly what the ‘Canes need in order to enter the playoffs as the number one seed. A 3-0 win on Saturday followed by a 4-1 victory on Sunday for Holland College over UNB gave the Hurricanes a six-point lead in the standings with the regular season winding down.

On Saturday in Fredericton the Hurricanes jumped out front with a first period goal from Samantha Woodworth followed by a second period marker from Nicolle Derry to give them a 2-0 lead.

Two minutes into the third period Taylor Joyce fired a shot home to give the ‘Canes a 3-0 lead.   This is how the game would end.

Mackenzie Koughan earned her fourth shutout of the season for the Hurricanes with her record improving to 7-2-0.

On Sunday the teams would skate to a scoreless first period with UNB jumping out front in the second to take the first lead of the game.

Shortly after Katelyn Dunn would win a battle in front of the UNB net and score the Hurricanes first goal of the game to tie things at 1-1.

Late in the second period the Hurricanes would begin to take control of the game, scoring two goals in thirty seconds to take a 3-1 lead; goal scorers were Dunn and Woodworth.

In the third period Joyce would score the games final goal giving the Hurricanes the 4-1 victory.

Kara Mason earned the victory in goal for Holland College, improving her record to 3-2-0 on the season.

With the two victories over the weekend the Hurricanes now sit at 10-4-0 on the season for 20 points. UNB falls to 7-5-0 and remains in second with 14 points with four games remaining.

The Hurricanes will play their final regular season games on March 2 and 3 when they visit the Acadia Axewomen in Wolfville, NS. The ‘Canes will then host the 2018 Atlantic Collegiate Women’s Hockey Championship on March 23-25 at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in Montague, PEI.
