WHKY | Hurricanes sweep important games with UNB at home

It was an important weekend of games for the women’s hockey Hurricanes as they completed the 2017 portion of their regular season schedule. The ‘Canes were able to pick up a 3-1 win on Saturday followed by a 4-3 victory on Sunday versus the University of New Brunswick in games in Charlottetown and Summerside.

In Saturday’s game, the Hurricanes Jess Redmond would score first with UNB’s Sydney DesRoches evening the game in the second. The Hurricanes would score twice in the third to take the victory with goals from Samantha Woodworth and Katelyn Dunn.

Erin Picco picked up two assists in the game for the Hurricanes while Dunn and Katie Parkman earned one each.

Kara Mason picked up the win in goal for the Hurricanes while Kate Northrup took the loss for UNB.

On Sunday, Sam Higgins gave the Hurricanes the lead in the first before Taylor Patterson tied it for UNB. Hayley Foote would give the Hurricanes the lead after two periods.

In the third period Katie Parkman scored to extend the Hurricanes lead to 3-1 before UNB mounted a comeback.

A Gisele Rudderham goal followed by a Makayla Oatway goal tied the game at 3-3 with 4:02 remaining in the game.

The Hurricanes would squeak out the victory when Katie Parkman scored a shorthanded goal with 2:49 remaining to put the ‘Canes ahead 4-3.

Mackenzie Koughan earned the win in goal for the ‘Canes while Kayleigh Robertson took the loss for UNB.

The two victories over the weekend for Holland College shrunk the UNB lead in the standings. UNB now sits at 6-2-0 while the ‘Canes are just two points back at 5-3-0.

Hurricanes forward Sam Higgins leads the lead scoring race with 10 points in seven games while Jess Redmond (2-4) and Sam Woodworth (1-5) both are in the top five.

The Hurricanes will return to action on January 13 when they host the Acadia Axewomen at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottotown followed by a Sunday game at the Credit Union Place in Summerside.
