WHKY | Hurricanes set for Atlantic Championship in Fredericton

DSC_0767The Holland College Hurricanes women’s hockey team will be in Fredericton this weekend as they look to defend their Atlantic Championship versus the University of New Brunswick and Acadia University.

The tournament is hosted by UNB and will run from Friday, March 31 to Sunday, April 2.

The ‘Canes finished the regular season with a 13-2-1 (win-loss-tied) record and will enter the tournament as the number one seed.

The tournament will be a three team round robin with the top team earning a spot in the finals with the other two teams playing in the semi-finals.

The ‘Canes will open the tournament on Friday at 7:30 PM against the second ranked UNB who finished the season with an 8-8 record. The season series ended 6-2 in favour of the Hurricanes.

The ‘Canes second game will be on Saturday at 6:30 PM against the third ranked Acadia Axewomen who finished the season with a 2-13-1 record. The season series ended 7-0-1 in favour of the Hurricanes.

The other game will feature Acadia vs UNB on Saturday at 10:00 AM. UNB took the season series 6-2.

The semi-final is set for Sunday morning at 9:30 AM with the final scheduled for 2:30 PM that afternoon.

Brailyne Jenkins of the Hurricanes was the regular season scoring champion with 15 points while Sam Higgins and Alyssa Ferguson finished tied for second with 14 points.

Hailey Matthews led the league in goals scored with ten while Samantha Woodworth was second with nine and Jenkins finished in third with eight.

Goaltenders Kara Mason and Mackenzie Koughan both had strong seasons, leading the league in most statistical categories.

Mackenzie was the busier of the two, playing in ten games with a record of 8-0-1; she was also tied for the league lead in shutouts with four. Mason ended the regular season with the lowest goals-against-average at 1.00.

The league will recognize members of their first and second All-Star team prior to Friday’s first game between UNB and the Hurricanes.

All games will be played at the Lady Beaverbrook Rink in Fredericton.
