WHKY | Hurricanes host UNB in battle for first place this weekend

On Saturday at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in Montague, Holland College and UNB will hit the ice at 7:30pm to finish off a day celebrating women’s hockey on Prince Edward Island.
Earlier on Saturday, beginning at 3pm, the UPEI Panthers will host the Saint Mary’s Huskies before the Midget AAA girls from Kings County host the Western Wind in regular season play at 5:20pm.
The action continues on Sunday when the Hurricanes host UNB at 3pm at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown to complete a busy weekend of women’s hockey.
The ‘Canes enter the weekend at 7-3-0 and in first place in the Atlantic standings while UNB sits at 6-2-0 and just two points behind Holland College with two games in hand.
In four previous matchups with UNB the ‘Canes dropped games on November 18 and 19 in Fredericton (3-0 and 2-1) before winning games on December 2 and 3 (3-1 and 4-3) on PEI.
The Hurricanes are coming off of two victories last weekend at home over the Acadia Axewomen by scores of 3-2 and 4-1.
In the league scoring race the Hurricanes hold the top three positions with Sam Higgins leading with 12 points (8G, 4A), Jess Redmond in second with seven points (2G, 5A) and Katie Parkman in third with six points (5G, 1A). UNB holds the remaining positions in the top-five with Makayla Oatway and Nathalie Laplante also having six points this season.
The Hurricanes will be in tough this weekend as they face the leagues goaltending leader, Kayleigh Robertson who has a goals against average of 1.00 with three shutouts in four games and a 3-1-0 record. Kate Northrup has also been strong in goal for UNB as she’s posted a GAA of 1.50, a 3-1-0 record and one shutout.
Goaltending has not been an issue for the Hurricanes this season as they’ve received quality performances from both of their goalies. Mackenzie Koughan has a 1.67 GAA, a 6-1-0 record and two shutouts while Kara Mason is 2-2-0 with a GAA of 1.75.
