WHKY | Hurricanes ending regular season this weekend versus Axewomen

March 1, 2018

The Holland Hurricanes women’s hockey team hits the road, as they will take on the Acadia Axewomen in Wolfville, NS on Friday and Saturday to close out their regular season. Friday’s game starts at 9pm with Saturday’s beginning at 4:45pm.

The Hurricanes need just two points to finish in first place at the end of the regular season, they enter the weekend with a 10-4-0 record, just two points back of UNB; the Hurricanes hold the tiebreaker as they’ve won the season series versus UNB, 5-3.

This season the Hurricanes have defeated the Axewomen in five of six games. After starting the season off with a 2-1 loss in Wolfville, the ‘Canes have picked up wins by scores of 5-0, 6-0, 4-2, 3-2 and 4-1 over Acadia. The victory in October was the only win of the season for Acadia to-date.

The Hurricanes currently hold the top four positions in the league-scoring race, with Sam Higgins in first with 15 points. Following Higgins is Sam Woodworth (11), Katelyn Dunn (9) and Jess Redmond (9) with four UNB players also sitting with nine points this season.

Mackenie Koughan and Kara Mason, the Hurricanes goaltenders, sit one-two in the goals-against-average category.

Koughan has a GAA of 1.33 and sits at 7-2-0 with four shutouts while Mason has a 1.60 GAA and a 3-2-0 record.

If the Hurricanes can earn a victory over the final two games of their regular season it will be the third straight season that Holland College entered the playoffs as the number one seed.

The Hurricanes will host the 2018 Atlantic Collegiate Women’s Hockey Championship at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in Montague on March 23-25.
