WHKY | Hurricanes end regular season with a pair of wins over Acadia

The Holland College women’s hockey team defeated the Acadia Axewomen in Nova Scotia over the weekend by scores of 6-1 and 4-2 to complete their regular season.

On Saturday, Annika Mason opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game before Acadia tied it up with four minutes to play in the period. The ‘Canes would waste little time regaining the lead as Hailey Matthews scored less than two minutes later.

The ‘Canes would add one in the second and three more in the third for the 6-1 win.

Samantha Woodworth scored twice with Matthews, Erin Picco, Mason, and Higginbotham adding a goal each. Alison Squires and Sam Higgins both had three assists and Picco and Alyssa Ferguson both added an assist.

‘Canes goalie Kara Mason picked up the win.

On Sunday, the ‘Canes score three goals in the second to extend their lead to 3-0. The Axewomen would get a goal back in the dying seconds to make it 3-1 heading into the third. The ‘Canes scored just over a minute into the third to regain the four goal lead. The Axewomen would get one late in the period but the ‘Canes would hold on for the 4-2 win.

Squires, Woodworth, Valerie Boswall and Brailyne Jenkins had the goals with Higgins picking up two assists and Squires and Woodworth both adding a single assist.  Mackenzie Koughan was the winning goaltender.

The ‘Canes end the regular season with a 13-2-1 (won-lost-tied) record and will enter the playoffs as the number one seed. The Axewomen fell to 1-12-1 and sit in third place with two games remaining versus the University of New Brunswick.

The Hurricanes will look to defend their Atlantic Championship in Fredericton March 31-April 2.
