WBBALL | Hurricanes off to Edmonton for CCAA National Championship

WBBALLteamphoto20162017The Holland College Hurricanes women’s basketball team is off to Edmonton, Alberta this week for the 2017 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship hosted by the NAIT Ooks, March 16-18.

The Hurricanes enter the tournament as the ACAA Champions after defeating the MSVU Mystics 75-64 on March 5 in the championship game in Sackville, NB.

The ‘Canes are making their fourth straight trip to nationals and are coming off a National silver medal last year.

The ‘Canes enter the tournament as the fourth seed and will play the fifth seeded Dawson College Blues who enter the event as the RSEQ runner-up.

Game time is Thursday, March 16 at 11 PM AST; the game can be seen live at www.ccaa.ca.

All-Canadian and ACAA Player of the Year Jayla Verney led the conference in scoring with 18.9 points per game this season while Cassie Cooke was seventh in points per game (13.3), first in rebounds per game (10.4), assists per game (8.7) and steals per game (4.5).

As a team the ‘Canes led the conference in points per game, assists per game and three-point percentage while sitting second in steals per game, field goal percentage and allowed the second fewest points per game.

If the Hurricanes are to win their opening match they would play on Friday at 11 PM AST versus the winner of Thursday’s Humber Hawks/NAIT Ooks game. A loss would have them play the loser on Friday at 6 PM AST.
