WBBALL | Hurricanes continue to roll with road victories over UNBSJ Seawolves

The Holland College women’s basketball team continued their recent run of success with a pair of victories over the UNBSJ Seawolves on the weekend.

On Saturday, the ‘Canes jumped out to a 19-8 lead after one quarter and took a 35-21 lead into the half. The women would win the third and fourth quarters by 12 points each, outscoring the Seawolves 49-25 in the second half en route to an 84-46 win.

Jayla Verney led the ‘Canes with 21 points with Chelsea Slawter-Wright adding 13. Tyleigha Nelson scored 11 points and six rebounds while Darcy Zinck contributed ten points and four rebounds in the win.

Cassie Cooke continued to make an impact since joining the squad with nine points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

On Sunday, the ‘Canes jumped out to a 24-13 lead after the first quarter before using a 21-4 second quarter to take a 45-17 lead into the locker room at halftime. The women would continue their strong play coming out of the locker room taking the third quarter by a score of 17-8. The ‘Canes would end up winning the game 88-43.

Verney once again led all scorers with 21 points in the win.

Cooke picked up a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds along with four assists and three steals.

Ty’Keia Beals scored 18 points off of the bench and Nelson contributed 11 points.

With the wins the ‘Canes, the number four ranked team in the country by the CCAA, remain atop the ACAA standings with a 10-1 record. The Seawolves fall to 2-7 and sit in sixth place in the conference.

The next game for the women’s Hurricanes will be Saturday, January 28 in Fredericton against the STU Tommies at 1:00 PM. They return to home on February 11 when they host the UNBSJ Seawolves at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.
