VBALL | Hurricanes men to end regular season on road; women set for crucial matches in Halifax

_MG_1733_MG_1705The Holland College Hurricanes volleyball teams hit the road this weekend with the men taking on the UNBSJ Seawolves in Saint John, NB and the women visiting the UKC Blue Devils and MSVU Mystics in Halifax, NS.

The ‘Canes men enter weekend play in first place with a 9-4 record and 18 points with two games left to play. The Seawolves sit right behind them with an 8-3 record and 16 points.

The ‘Canes currently lead the league in kills per set, hitting percentage, assists per set and points per set.

Individually, Gordon Veitch sits second in the league in kills per set with 3.17 while teammate Brett Butler is third with 2.56. Tynan Murphy and Kenton Dawkins are both in the top seven with 2.22 and 2.02 kills per set respectively.

Dominique Ryan leads the league in total assists with 398 and sits second in assists per set with 7.96.

The ‘Canes are 1-2 against the Seawolves this year, suffering losses on November 6 in Saint John and January 14 in Charlottetown while picking up a win on January 15 in Charlottetown.

Games times are set for 6:00 PM on Saturday and 12:00 PM on Sunday.

On the women’s side, the ‘Canes enter play with a 16-2 record and sit in a tie for first place with their opponent on Sunday, the 16-1 MSVU Mystics. The Blue Devils have a record of 2-14 this season in the ACAA.

The ‘Canes lead the league in kills per set, hitting percentage, assists per set and points per set while sitting second in aces per set.

The Mystics lead the conference in aces per set and digs per set, while sitting second in kills per set, hitting percentage, assists per set, blocks per set and points per set.

Individually, the ‘Canes are led offensively by the attacking trio of Alice Marques, Megan LeBlanc, and Brittany States. Marques sits in second in the ACAA averaging 3.07 kills per set while LeBlanc and States are seventh and ninth with 2.18 and 1.91 kills per set respectively. The Mystics also have three players in the top ten in kills per set.

Gracie Ferguson leads the conference in assists per set at 7.42 just barely ahead of the MSVU setter who sits at 7.27 assists per set. Dana Trainor leads the league with 4.74 digs per set while MSVU has a pair of player’s right behind her at 4.62 and 4.45 digs per set.

The first two meetings of the season against the Mystics were split with the ‘Canes sweeping MSVU in Halifax on November 26 before falling in a five set thriller in Charlottetown on January 21.

The ‘Canes have taken both matches against the Blue Devils this year with a pair of 3-0 wins on November 19 and 20 in Charlottetown.

Game times are set for 4:00 PM on Saturday and 1:00 PM on Sunday.
