VBALL | Hurricanes men split with UNBSJ; women defeat Dal AC

The Holland College Hurricanes men’s and women’s volleyball teams were in action at home this weekend when the ‘Canes women hosted the Dal AC Rams while the men hosted the UNBSJ Seawolves at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.
The women’s Hurricanes swept the Dal AC Rams with set scores of 25-12, 25-21, and 26-24 on Saturday afternoon.
Megan LeBlanc had 11 kills to lead the ‘Canes with Alice Marques and Brittany States adding seven and five respectively.
Gracie Ferguson had a game high 22 assists to go along with two aces.
The win keeps the ‘Canes atop the standings with an 11-1 record while the Rams fall to 1-10 on the season and are tied for seventh.
The women’s ‘Canes will return to the court on January 21 against MSVU and January 22 against Mount Allison, both at the Centre for Community Engagement.
The ‘Canes men’s team fell in a thrilling five set match on Saturday by set scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-15, 13-25, 15-11.
Four ‘Canes had over ten kills with Gordon Veitch leading the way with 16. Tynan Murphy, Brett Butler, and Kenton Dawkins had 13, 12, and 10 respectively.
Dominique Ryan had 50 assists in the loss while Riley Cortes led the team with 13 digs.
The ‘Canes bounced back on Sunday to take the victory in four sets. Set scores were 25-23, 20-25, 31-29, and 25-17.
Veitch had another strong game with 19 kills. Murphy had 13 kills while Dawkins and Butler both recorded eight. Dawkins added seven blocks for the ‘Canes.
Ryan had 43 assists and Marcus Lapointe led the team with 15 digs.
The ‘Canes remain in first place with a 7-3 record, two points ahead of the 6-3 Seawolves.
The men’s Hurricanes will return to action on January 28 and 29 when they travel to Fredericton to take on the STU Tommies.
