Play Ball! Hurricanes accepted to Canadian Collegiate Baseball League
January 13, 2014
Holland College applied to the CCBA in late 2013 in hopes of being accepted.
“It’s the news we have been waiting to hear as we can now begin the building process to field a competitive varsity baseball team here at Holland College. We think the collegiate baseball product will be high-caliber and give the sport a real boost in Prince Edward Island. And we’re excited that it will happen right away in 2014”, said Albert Roche, Holland College’s Athletic Director.
The Hurricanes join St. Mary’s University, St. F.X. University, University of New Brunswick, Cape Breton University, Dalhousie University and Crandall University in the Atlantic division. The league uses wooden bats and plays seven inning games.
Games will begin in early September with conference playoffs occurring in early October. The national championships are slated to be held in Montreal, Quebec in 2014 where the top teams will compete for league supremacy. The schedule consists of teams playing double-headers during the regular season.
The Hurricanes will call Charlottetown’s Memorial Field at Victoria Park home during the 2014 baseball season.
Holland College is expected to name the team head coach/baseball manager in the coming days. The team will begin to prepare for their inaugural season through workouts and indoor sessions this winter and spring before the players will leave to play during the summer with their club teams. Training camp will pick up again in late August.
There is an open meeting being held on Wednesday, January 15th at 5:30pm at Holland College’s Centre for Community Engagement, Room 311 for anyone interested in Hurricanes baseball. The meeting is open to the community, including players interested in trying out or public wanting to volunteer with the baseball program or become a booster club member.
Anyone looking to try out for the team or receive more information on the Hurricanes baseball team is asked to email firstname.lastname@example.org.
