MSOC | Hurricanes hosting 2018 CCAA National Soccer Championship
June 8, 2017
This is the first time the Hurricanes have hosted this event; they’ve hosted seven CCAA national championships in the past including golf (2008, 2011, 2016), women’s soccer (2012), men’s volleyball (2015), women’s volleyball (2016) and men’s basketball (2017).
“We were pretty excited with the news,” shared Director of Athletics and Recreation at Holland College, Albert Roche. “I think soccer is one of those sports where a home-field advantage is important.”
The event will bring eight of the top men’s soccer teams from around the country to Prince Edward Island in November 2018 following their respective regular seasons and conference championships. The field will be made up of five conference champions (ACAA, RSEQ, OCAA, ACAC and PACWEST) two wild-card teams as well as the host Hurricanes.
“Holland College has earned the reputation for hosting excellent CCAA national championships,” shared Dave Munro, men’s soccer convenor for the CCAA. “The Holland College team has developed a successful formula and they’ve succeeded in creating memorable and unique experiences for our student-athletes when they have hosted in the past.”
The Hurricanes are the reigning ACAA champions, having won the conference title six times in team history dating back to their first in 2009.
“We’ve never shied away from producing a team that can compete at nationals and this is just a little more fuel for the fire,” shared Roche. “It’s good ammunition for us to use on the recruitment trail, too.”
The Hurricanes will open up their 2017 ACAA regular season on the road on September 9 versus the Dal AC Rams in Truro, Nova Scotia. Their home opener is set for September 23 versus the St. Thomas Tommies.
The 2017 championship will take place in British Columbia and is hosted by the Vancouver Island University Mariners.
