MBASE | Hurricanes split games with X-Men, sweep UNB in weekend action

The Holland Hurricanes returned to the diamond this weekend, first holding their home opener at Memorial Field at Victoria Park on Saturday versus the St. FX X-Men. They would follow this up with a road trip to Fredericton to take on the University of New Brunswick on Sunday.

In front of their home fans for the first time in 2017, the ‘Canes would pick up the 4-1 victory in game one versus St. FX; they scored two in the third inning and two more in the fourth to pick up the win. Colin Arsenault would go down as the winning pitcher with Brandon Greeno entering the game in the top of the seventh inning to record the save.

Several ‘Canes batters went 2-for-3 at the plate including Matt Barlow, Ryne MacIsaac, Jesse Holman and Zach Grosse. Barlow led the way with three RBI’s.

In game two the Hurricanes fell behind early but would tie it at 1-1 in the second inning. Two runs scored in the third and two more in the fourth gave the Hurricanes a 5-1 lead. A six run rally by the X-Men in the fourth gave them the lead. The teams exchanged three runs each in the seventh giving the X-Men the 10-8 victory.

Charles MacLellan was the starting pitcher for the ‘Canes, pitching three innings. Danny Rice entered in the fourth and was charged with the loss while Matt Barlow pitched the final 3 2/3’s innings.

Ryna MacIssac was the top offensive player for the ‘Canes going 4-for-5 with two doubles in the game.

The action continued on Sunday with a double-header in Fredericton versus the University of New Brunswick.

In game one the ‘Canes shot out to a 6-0 lead through two innings and added two more in the fourth. UNB would claw back with three runs in the fifth before the Hurricanes scored their final run in the fifth to take a 9-3 win.

Brady Arsenault was the winning pitcher for the ‘Canes.

In game two UNB would strike first, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. They would add another in the third with the Hurricanes scoring one in the process.

Another run in the fourth followed by a massive seven run fifth for the ‘Canes put them ahead 9-4. Two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh gave the Hurricanes the 12-7 victory.

Zach Gosse was the winning pitcher for the Hurricanes in the game.

The three victories over the weekend moved the Hurricanes to 5-1 on the season as they lead the Atlantic Conference.

The Hurricanes remain at home for four games this weekend when they host the University of New Brunswick on Saturday and the Acadia Axemen on Sunday; games are at 1 and 3:30pm on both days at Memorial Field at Victoria Park.
