MacLean and Ethelston chosen as Hurricanes Athletes of the Week
November 12, 2013
Soccer player Bethany MacLean and basketball player Steve Ethelston have been chosen as the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 10.
MacLean, a first year center back from Cornwall, attended the CCAA National Women’s Soccer Championship this past week with the Hurricanes in Surrey, British Columbia. MacLean was calm and composed as she defended the top players in the country from MacEwen University, Algonquin College and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Head coach Kris McKinnon said “Bethany played great, always giving a 100% effort no matter the score”. She was also named as the Hurricanes player of the game following their first game versus MacEwen. MacLean was a member of the Bluefield senior high Bobcat’s last season.
The Hurricanes, who finished eighth in the championship, are the 2013 ACAA Champions. Entering the ACAA Championships the Hurricanes, ranked fourth, defeated the top seeded UKC Blue Devils in the semi-finals and the second ranked MSVU Mystics in the finals.
Ethelston, a second year shooting guard from Riverview, New Brunswick led the Hurricanes with 17 points, seven rebounds and one assist in thirty-three minutes of play on Saturday en route to a victory over the St. Thomas University Tommies. When head coach Josh Whitty was asked about the former Riverview High Royals player he simply said, “He played a big game for us”.
The Hurricanes went on to defeat their ACAA rivals 79-70 in Fredericton and improve to 2-0 on the season. The Hurricanes will hold their home opener this Saturday night when they host the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics at 6 pm, and again on Sunday at 3 pm.
The Hurricanes are the reigning ACAA champions and CCAA national silver medalists.
