Lunn and Bowden chosen as Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

January 28, 2014

Hockey player Ashley Lunn and basketball player Chase Bowden have been chosen as the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 26.

Lunn, a first year Sport & Leisure Management student from Back Greenfield, New Brunswick scored three times in Saturdays 3-3 tie versus UNB in Eastern Canadian Women’s Collegiate Hockey League action at the Eastlink Centre.

With the Hurricanes trailing 3-1 with less than two minutes remaining in the third period, Lunn was able to tuck the puck home on the power play to bring the game to within a single goal. She would then receive a pass in the slot and fire a shot over the blocker of the UNB goaltender to tie the game with just thirty-six seconds remaining; these were her first three goals on the season and gave the Hurricanes their second straight tie this season.

The Hurricanes, who are competing in the ECWHL for the first year with UNB, Cape Breton University and Acadia University, are currently 0-6-2 this season and are preparing to visit CBU this weekend for two road games. They return home on Saturday, February 8th for a game in Borden versus CBU at 7pm and on Sunday, February 9th at 12:30pm, also in Borden.

Bowden, a Sport & Leisure Management student from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia is a second year forward for the Hurricanes. This past weekend on the road, Bowden went on to score 14 points versus Dal-AC on Saturday, shooting seven-for-nine from the field and adding seven rebounds, while on Sunday versus Mount Allison he had a big game, scoring 23 points and adding 21 rebounds in the game.

The Hurricanes improved to 11-2 on the season with their wins this weekend which brings them closer to the first place Crandall Chargers, who with their loss this weekend, now sit at 12-2 this season.

The ‘Canes basketball team will visit Mount Saint Vincent University this Saturday before taking on the University of Kings College on Sunday. The Hurricanes return home on Sunday, February 9th when they host the Mount Allison Mounties at 4pm.
