Hurricanes women’s volleyball fall to Mounties in fifth set
February 6, 2014
The Holland Hurricanes have taken the ACAA’s second place team, the Mount Allison Mounties, to five sets twice in the last seven days; a sign of tremendous improvement for a team that held a 0-10 record heading into last Wednesday’s game.
Last Wednesday in Charlottetown the Hurricanes would go on to defeat the Mounties for their first win of the season, winning the fifth set 16-14 in front of a rowdy Hurricanes crowd.
This Wednesday the ‘Canes bounced back when facing defeat in the fourth set to force the game into the fifth, ultimately falling to the Mounties 15-6 in the game’s final set in Sackville, New Brunswick.
The first set went point for point with both teams fighting to take the lead. The Mounties took that set 25-21 but the Hurricanes would rebound with a strong win in the second set 25-23.
With the game tied 1-1, the Mounties would win the third set handedly 25-17 setting up the opportunity to close out the match in the fourth set.
As the fourth set progressed the Mounties lead increased to 15-8 until the Hurricanes mounted a comeback, eventually winning the set 25-23.
The Hurricanes suffered from several unforced errors in the fifth set failing to give the Mounties much of a battle losing with a final score of 15-6.
The Hurricanes fall to 1-13 on the season while the Mounties improve to 10-4 and remain in second place in the ACAA standings.
Holland College will be on the road again this Friday when they travel to Halifax to take on the MSVU Mystics and on Saturday when they visit the Dalhousie Agricultural College Rams in Truro, Nova Scotia.
The ‘Canes will play their next home game on Saturday, February 15th at 2pm versus the UNBSJ Seawolves at the Centre for Community Engagement.
