Hurricanes women’s hockey open pre-season as part of World Girl’s Hockey Weekend
October 16, 2013
The Holland Hurricanes women’s hockey team is back this season and to kick things off they were a part of the 2013 World Girl’s Hockey Weekend. The Hurricanes took part in an exhibition game on Saturday evening at the Gateway Arena with the Borden senior women’s team.
In a game that seen a roster made up of players trying out for the team the Hurricanes went on to win 2-0, capped off with a late goal from Janelle MacLeod to seal the victory.
The Hurricanes then put on a skills clinic to Atom and Peewee aged girls on Sunday in Borden run by the team’s head coach Morgan Rice.
“It was great chances to have our team enter the community and work with these young players. It’s all about growing the game and getting more girls to start and continue to play hockey.”
The weekend was capped off with an open skate for all minor hockey girls’ players to participate in.
“It was a great experience to be able to represent not only women’s hockey but also Holland College. Hopefully this event will help encourage females to play hockey; it was a well-organized event and I look forward to it next year”, shared MacLeod on her experience.
The Hurricanes are a member of the Eastern Canadian Collegiate Women’s Hockey League (www.ecwhl.com) alongside the UNB Red Blazers, Cape Breton Capers and Acadia women’s hockey teams. Each team will play 12 regular season games finalized by a league championship held at the Aitken Centre in Fredericton and hosted by the University of New Brunswick. The tournament will take place on March 15th and 16th and a league champion will be crowned.
The Hurricanes will kick off their regular season with a road trip to UNB to take on the Red Blazers on November 2nd and 3rd. The team’s first home games take place on November 23rd and 24th when they welcome Acadia to the island.
