Hurricanes to recognize athletes this Friday at Awards Gala; nominees announced for Athletes of the Year awards

AWARDSBANQUET2017This Friday evening at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement the Holland Hurricanes will celebrate another year of athletics; this year will mark the 13th edition of the Awards Gala.

The evening will serve as a way to celebrate the accomplishments of the various Holland Hurricanes sports teams now that the 2016-2017 season has been completed.

During the evening the Hurricanes will hand out individual team awards, recognize academic standouts plus name the Coach of the Year and Male and Female Rookie and Athletes of the Year.

Today the Hurricanes released the names of the student-athletes nominated for their Rookie and Athletes of the Year awards.

The following student-athletes have been named as nominees for the Holland Hurricanes Female Rookie of the Year Award. Ty’Keia Beals (basketball), T-Anna Fraser (soccer), Emma Hughes (badminton), Mackenzie Koughan (hockey) and Brittany States (volleyball).

The following student-athletes have been named as nominees for the Holland Hurricanes Male Rookie of the Year Award. Harrison Ellison (soccer), Marcus Lapointe (volleyball), Ryne MacIsaac (baseball), Theo Ngezahayo (soccer) and Brandon Wilson (football).

The following student-athletes have been named as nominees for the Holland Hurricanes Female Athlete of the Year Award. Emma Hughes (badminton), Alice Marques (volleyball), Karleigh McEwen (golf), Briar Roberts (soccer) and Jayla Verney (basketball).

The following student-athletes have been named as nominees for the Holland Hurricanes Male Athlete of the Year Award. Trenity Burdine (basketball), Zach Davidson (football), Ryan Merrett (cross country running), Dominique Ryan (baseball/volleyball) and Ibra Sanoh (soccer).

Other major awards being announced on Friday is the Hurricanes, President’s, Citizenship and Leadership in Sport awards, which recognize student-athletes for their various accomplishments not just in competition but away from the court/field as well.

The evening begins with a meal for the athletes at 6pm followed by the awards portion of the event beginning at 6:45pm. The public is welcome to watch the event at no cost from the track of the Centre for Community Engagement.
