Tonight at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall at Holland College, several Hurricanes will receive awards for their accomplishments during the 2016 year.
Briar Roberts, a member of the Hurricanes women’s soccer team in her third year at Holland College, is a finalist for the female Intercollegiate Athlete of the Year award.
Roberts, from Kinkora, PEI, steered the Hurricanes to its fourth ACAA championship in team history in 2016. The midfielder was named a CCAA All-Canadian and Academic All-Canadian as well as the ACAA Player of the Year.
Other finalists are Jessica Cameron from Mount Mellick who plays goal for the women’s hockey team at Castleton University in Vermont and Ellen Murphy of Augustine Cove who is a member of the St. FX rugby team.
Also being recognized on Wednesday night is the Hurricanes women’s basketball team. The ‘Canes were named the SCORE! Team of the Year.
In 2016 the Hurricanes won the ACAA Championship and captured the CCAA National silver medals for the first time in team history.
This season the Hurricanes have continued to impress as they lead the ACAA standings with a 13-1 record. They return to action at home this weekend when they host the UNBSJ Seawolves (2-11) on Saturday and the UKC Blue Devils (5-9) on Sunday; both games begin at 2pm at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.
“We are honoured and humbled by the opportunity to be named the Team of the Year,” shared head coach Mike Connolly.
Lastly, head coach Josh Whitty of the men’s basketball Hurricanes has been named the PEI Mutual Insurance Company Coach of the Year.
Last season the Hurricanes finished with a 20-1 record in the ACAA before winning the conference title and finishing third at the CCAA Nationals.
“It certainly is a nice honour,” says Whitty. “It’s really a recognition of how my team played last year.”
This March the Hurricanes will host the CCAA National Men’s Basketball Championship here in Charlottetown.
The ‘Canes return to action this weekend alongside the Hurricanes women taking on UNBSJ and UKC; game times are 4pm each day.
