Hurricanes soccer ready to begin new season
September 5, 2013
The Holland Hurricanes soccer teams are ready to kick-start their 2013 ACAA soccer seasons this weekend when both the men’s and women’s team play home games on Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday the Hurricanes will take on the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics at 2 pm (women) and 4 pm (men) at the Terry Fox Complex in Cornwall.
The women’s Hurricanes finished in first place in last year’s ACAA regular season while the Mystics finished in second. The Mystics captured the ACAA championship last season in the finals with a 1-0 win over the Hurricanes. At CCAA Nationals the Canes grabbed some revenge with a 2-1 victory over the Mystics. This is indeed an early season feature match as the rivalry intensifies.
Returning mid-fielder Laura Younker points to the importance of these matches, “Having MSVU and Kings here for our home opening weekend is exciting. These two teams will challenge for the top spots in the league so we have to be ready. Our pre-season has went well and we feel prepared”
The men’s Hurricanes also finished first at the end of the ACAA regular season in 2012 with the Mystics sitting alone in second place. The Hurricanes were the 2012 ACAA soccer champions.
Hurricanes Matt Derry shared these thoughts heading into the opening weekend of play. “I’m really looking forward to getting the season underway this weekend. It should be a good test to see where we stand as a team and I am confident with the group of guys we have. So far we are looking very strong and I’m hoping for some good results this weekend.”
Men’s head coach Jonathan Vos is looking forward to this weekend. “We have several players returning and some good new additions. Pre-season tour was a great chance for the players to get to know each other on and off the pitch. Work rate in training has been exceptional with strong competition for positions. “
On Sunday the Hurricanes continue their home-stand by welcoming the University of Kings College Blue Devils to PEI. The women’s and men’s teams from UKC both finished in third place in last year’s ACAA regular season standings.
Sunday’s games begin at 1 pm (women) and 3 pm (men), both at the Terry Fox Complex as well.
“The squad is looking forward to this weekend. Having had a good preseason the girls have been focused and committed in training as we prepare for what will be a good test against two top teams in our conference. We have come through a tough preseason schedule injury free and look forward to getting our season started” stated women’s head coach Kris McKinnon.
Canes striker Kristin Hood had the following to say heading into this weekend’s action. “I’m very excited and confident to play our first game this Saturday. I think we have a team that is made up of very strong and skilled individuals that work very well together. I think we have the potential and heart to succeed this weekend.”
The Hurricanes are coming off of a busy preseason which seen them play games in Saint John versus the UNBSJ Seawolves last Saturday. The teams then travelled across the border to Maine where they challenged the University of Vermont Tech Knights and the University of Maine Fort-Kent Bengals .
