Hurricanes Receive Volleyball Honours
February 24, 2014
The Holland Hurricanes were rewarded with two all-conference selections and a Libero of the Year award at the 2014 ACAA Volleyball Championships. The awards banquet opened the weekend championships hosted by Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick.
Veterans Mike Harris and Jeremy MacKinnon were voted to the all-conference team that featured the top six players from the four men’s teams in the ACAA.
The Libero of the Year Award was won by Brandon Boyce and it marked the first time a Hurricane has earned the coveted award.
All three players are Islanders with McKinnon from Brackley Beach, Harris hailing from Summerside and another western product in Boyce who is from O’Leary.
Going into the championships, the ‘Canes were ranked third, with a 4-8 record. On Saturday, in their first game of the Championships, the ‘Canes quickly took care of business against second place UNBSJ Seawolves winning all three sets.
Sunday’s championship game was a tough one for the ‘Canes against the STU Tommies, the top seeded team. The Tommies took the first two sets, then the ‘Canes rallied in the third, but it was not enough with the Tommies winning the third and final set 25-21. It was the second time in three years the Hurricanes have finished as silver medalists.
