The men’s and women’s basketball Hurricanes have been working hard over the past month in their respective training camps which have included practices, fitness training, video sessions and intrasquad games. For the first time this season, the teams will be going head-to-head with opposing teams.

This weekend the Holland Hurricanes will be hosting teams from all over eastern Canada in a three day tournament. On the men’s side teams from Lee Academy (Maine), UPEI, Crandall University (Moncton) and UNB Saint John will compete while the on the women’s side, a PEI Senior Women’s team, Crandall University and UNB Saint John will join the Hurricanes.

The women Hurricanes are excited with the additions they’ve made to the lineup this off-season and are eager to hit the court. They will be playing three games over the weekend (Friday at 7pm versus a PEI Senior Women’s team, Saturday at 7pm versus the UNBSJ Seawolves and Sunday at 1pm versus the Crandall Chargers).

Coach Mike Connolly is eager for the season to get underway. “This has been our best recruiting year yet and we are getting to know each other as a basketball team. When we play together we are very effective and I’m looking forward to working with some very talented athletes.”

For the men’s team they are coming off of an extremely successful season garnering an ACAA Championship and a CCAA national silver medal. The team is made up of a strong group of returning players and coach Whitty is ready to get the season underway.

” We’re looking forward to three good tests early in our season. We’ve had a great training camp and are looking forward to getting out and competing. ”

On Friday the men’s Hurricanes will take on the Lee Academy at 9pm, while on Saturday they will challenge UNB Saint John, also at 9pm. They will finish their tournament schedule off on Sunday when they take on the Crandall Chargers at 3pm. All tournament games will take place at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown. Admission to games is $5.00 for adults while students and kids are free.
