Saturday – Hurricanes 2 @ UNB Red Blazers 4

The Holland Hurricanes kicked off their 2013-2014 ECWHL regular season on Saturday when they travelled to Fredericton to take on the UNB Red Blazers at the Aitken Centre. The Red Blazers entered the game with a 1-0-1 record after playing two games with Acadia last weekend.

The Hurricanes went ahead at 7:59 with a goal from Chantal Gallant but UNB tied the game at 9:40 and went ahead at 12:14 after goals from Heather Braun and Brittney Carroll.

In the second period the ‘Canes tied the game at 8:18 when Gallant scored her second of the game. The lead was short lived after Charity Walls scored at 10:07 to put the Red Blazers back up 3-2.

In the third period the Red Blazers relied on the loan goal from Sasha Mooney at 7:22 to give them the 4-2 victory.

Candace Hopkinson played in goal for the Hurricanes while Laura Bray backstopped the Red Blazers.

Sunday – Hurricanes 3 @ UNB Red Blazers 4

For the second straight day the Hurricanes and Red Blazers battled at the UNB Aitken Centre.

At the 10:59 mark of the first period the Red Blazers Kiaya Jorden scored to put UNB up 1-0 but the ‘Canes Katie Flynn responded at 12:27 to tie the game at 1-1 after the first period.

In the second period the ‘Canes Taylor Lynds scored just fourteen seconds into the period to give them the early 2-1 lead, but a goal from Heather Braun at 4:41 tied the game at 2-2. Before the end of the period the ‘Canes found the back of the net to take a 3-2 lead through fourty minutes, Melissa French was the goal scorer at 10:40.

In the third period the ‘Canes held onto the lead for most of the period before the Red Blazers tied the game at 3-3 with a goal from Lauren Hill at 8:30. With the score tied heading into the final minutes Heather Braun scored at 13:22 to put UNB up 4-3 over the Hurricanes.

With the victory the UNB red Blazers improve to 3-0-1 while the Hurricanes drop to 0-2.

The next game up for the Hurricanes they will host Acadia for a pair of home games on November 23rd at the APM Centre in Cornwall (8 pm) and Sunday, November 24th at the Plex in Slemon Park (12:10 pm).
