Hurricanes fall to Maniacs in shootout; Boutin stops 50 of 53

The Holland Hurricanes wrapped up their exhibition schedule Monday night in Montague versus the Maniacs with a 4-3 shootout lost, it was the second of two exhibition games the two teams played against each other this week in preparation for the 2013-2014 Island Junior Hockey League regular season. These two teams meet again on Friday, October 4th in Montague at 7:30 pm to begin their regular seasons. The Hurricanes host their home opener on Saturday, October 5th at 8:15 pm versus the Western Red Wings at Simmons Sport Centre.
Starting goaltender for the Hurricanes, Jonathan Boutin faced 53 shots on goal during the game while the Hurricanes responded with 18 of their own. Boutin’s outstanding play allowed the Hurricanes to remain in the game, holding leads on two separate occasions.
In the first period Hurricanes Blake Ozon scored at 9:29 from Seyforth and Richards to put the ‘Canes up 1-0 heading into the first intermission.
The Maniacs responded in the second period when MacLeod scored at 3:45 to tie the game at 1-1. The Hurricanes would regain the lead however at 14:45 when Blake Ozon fired a high shot into the Maniacs net to put the Hurricanes up 2-1 late in the second period, but the Maniacs’ Collins scored less than a minute later to tie the game at 2-2. The teams would head to their dressing rooms for the intermission tied.
In the third period the Maniacs were able to take the lead when Nicholson scored at 7:05 into the period to put his team up 3-2. The Hurricanes outshot the Maniacs in the third period and at 13:46 of the period Patrick Cummiskey fired a shot over the blocker of the Maniacs goalie to tie the game at 3-3. Both teams exchanged chances as the clock ran down but neither team was able to break the tie.
Due to the game being an exhibition the teams did not play an overtime period but moved right into a shootout. The Maniacs second shooter, Matt Higgins was able to score with a high shot over the glove of Boutin while Gardner, Ozon and Cummiskey were the Hurricanes shooters, all unable to score.
The Hurricanes will practice Tuesday in preparation of Friday and Saturdays league games. The team is expected to make final decisions on roster spots on Tuesday and Wednesday.
