July 14, 2014

2013-2014 Top Scholar-Athletes

Holland College is pleased to announce the student-athletes who have been honoured for their academic and athletic achievement in the sports of golf, soccer, football, volleyball, basketball and hockey in the 2013-14 academic year. A total of 62 Hurricanes made the grade combining a commitment to their studies with competing at a varsity or club level in their chosen sports. Forty-one students who participated in Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Sports were recently nominated for the national Scholar-Athlete Award. Twenty-one student-athletes in football and hockey were recognized with Hurricanes Scholar awards. These awards are presented to student-athletes who have achieved an honours standing at Holland College in the 2013-14 academic year.

Hurricanes Athletics is recognizing the top Male and Female Scholar-Athletes with awards of distinction this year. The top female is Tourism & Travel Management graduate, Laura Younker from Charlottetown, who produced an average of 91.46%. On the men’s side, it is Jay Dearborn, from Yarker, Ontario, an Energy Systems Engineering Technology student, who pushed his average to 92.50%. Younker had also been chosen as this year’s recipient of the Bell Aliant Award for her efforts with the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association conference champion women’s soccer team, while Jay Dearborn was special teams player of the year for the Atlantic Football League champion Hurricanes football squad.

In total this year, sixty-two student-athletes are being recognized as recipients of the CCAA Scholar Athlete Award and Hurricanes Scholar-Athlete Award. This is a significant jump and sets a new standard for Hurricanes student-athletes overtaking the 2012-13 program record of forty-four students garnering the awards. Of special note is the five student-athletes who have successfully competed in two sports.

• Jonathon Hovingh, Men’s Basketball and Volleyball
• Eric Locke, Men’s Golf and Hockey
• Victoria McCrindle, Women’s Soccer and Hockey
• Alexandra Hicks, Women’s Soccer and Hockey
• Kelsey Jones, Men’s Soccer and Volleyball

To receive this honor a student has to achieve an academic standing averaging at least 80% over their full year of studies at Holland College.

Athletics & Recreation Director, Albert Roche, is extremely pleased with the number of awards. “We strive to attract student-athletes who can perform well academically because we know how challenging life can be when attempting to balance studies with the rigors of varsity sport. This group of students is a great source of pride for the Hurricanes and Holland College and we congratulate all our recipients on attaining this level of academic excellence.”
