Hurricanes basketball players receive ACAA awards

The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball players received recognition from the ACAA on Friday evening in Truro at the annual league banquet.

Men’s team members Chase Bowden and Alvin Parker each received 1st team ACAA All-Star honors while first year player, Orlando Palmer was named a 2nd team ACAA All-Star.

On the women’s side, Jazlin Barker was the lone Hurricanes player to be placed on the ACAA’s 1st All-Star team while two of her teammates, Janea Barrett and Ashley Moss were named 2nd team ACAA All-Star’s.

Another big moment on the night for the Hurricanes included rookie Jazlin Barker being named the ACAA’s female Rookie of the Year.

The Hurricanes Steph Hiltz was also nominated for the Rob Shoveller award for the player who has showed excellence in academics, athletics, leadership and sportsmanship.

Both Hurricanes teams competed in the ACAA finals on Sunday with the women falling to the STU Tommies while the men earned their second straight league title with a victory over the Crandall Chargers.

Both teams have earned invitations to the CCAA national basketball championships.

The women’s championship will be held in Longueuil, Quebec while the men’s tournament is slated for Squamish, B.C. Both tournaments take place March 13th-15th.
