Hurricanes basketball dominate UKC over weekend

The Holland Hurricanes welcomed the UKC Blue Devils to Charlottetown for back-to-back days of men’s and women’s basketball at the Centre for Community Engagement.
In women’s basketball on Saturday the Hurricanes used a big second quarter to pull away from the Blue Devils en route to a 97-59 victory.
Steph Hiltz led the ‘Canes with 21 points and ten assists, Ashley Moss scored 16 points to go along with 15 rebounds and Jazlin Barker scored 16 points, going eight for ten from the field, to lead the ‘Canes to victory.
Bhreagh Moore led the Blue Devils with 22 points in the game.
The Hurricanes led 26-17, 57-27 and 79-50 at the end of each quarter.
On Sunday these two teams would meet again for an afternoon matchup which seen the Hurricanes jump out to a 27-4 after the first quarter and never looked back, eventually defeating the Blue Devils 82-48.
Jazlin Barker led the ‘Canes with 17 points while new-comer Janea Barrett added 12 points and was six for nine in field goal shooting.
Bhreagh Moore recorded 20 points and was the top point-getter for the Blue Devils.
The Hurricanes held leads of 42-21 at the half, and 62-36 after the third quarter.
With the victory the Hurricanes now sit at 8-1 on the season and are just two points behind the league leading STU Tommies who are a perfect 9-0 this season. These two teams will play this upcoming Saturday at 5:30pm in Fredericton in a battle for first place. The Hurricanes will then travel to Saint John on Sunday for a game with the UNBSJ Seawolves at 2pm.
The Hurricanes’ Orlando Palmer and Chase Bowden each scored 25 points on Saturday night to lead Holland College to a 121-69 victory over the UKC Blue Devils. Palmer went 10 for 13 in field goal shooting while Bowden added 14 rebounds in the game.
The Hurricanes went on to hold a 26-13 lead after the first quarter and was up by 54-30 at half. A big third quarter extended their lead to 92-50.
Keegan Meyer led the Blue Devils with 21 points in the game.
In Sunday afternoon’s game the ‘Canes jumped out to a big first half lead en route to a 101-73 victory.
Jake Kendrick scored 22 points and went nine for 12 from the field to lead the Hurricanes offensively. Ali Abdulaziz added 17 points for Holland College.
JJ Wilson led the Blue Devils with 24 points in the game.
The Hurricanes led 61-30 at halftime and 87-56 after the third quarter of play.
With the two victories Holland College has improved their record to 7-2 on the season and remains in second place in the ACAA standings, currently trailing the Crandall Chargers who are 9-1 on the season.
The ‘Canes will take on STU this Saturday at 7:30pm in Fredericton and UNBSJ on Sunday at 2:30pm in Saint John.
