Hurricanes Athletes of the Week
February 25, 2013
Women’s Athlete of the Week
One of the most consistent attackers for the women’s volleyball Hurricanes this season, middle hitter Emily Caldwell is this week’s female athlete of the week. The 5’7″ Hartland, N.B., native averaged over two kills per set for the Hurricanes this season while providing a solid presence offensively and defensively.
Teammates describe Caldwell as being a great all-around player who displays strong leadership by keeping her team’s head in the game if they make a mistake.
Caldwell is a first-year student in the Medical Support Services program, and a graduate of the TNT Volleyball Club in Woodstock, N.B., where she was named a Tier 2 All-Star at the 2012 New Brunswick Senior Women’s Provincial Championships.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Sam Bishop is this week’s male athlete of the week. A 6’0″ power hitter from Port Williams, N.S., Bishop had a strong match in Holland College’s season finale at home against the UNB-Saint John Seawolves on Sunday morning.
Bishop posted a team-high 11 kills to go along with five digs and an ace in a grinding five-set victory over UNB-Saint John to send the Hurricanes to next weekend’s ACAA Championships at Université Sainte-Anne on a winning note.
Bishop is a first-year student in the Heritage Retrofit Carpentry program at Holland College, and he is a graduate of the Valley Waves Volleyball Club in Nova Scotia, where he was a tournament all-star at the 2010 Nova Scotia provincial volleyball championships.
