GOLF | Hurricanes in Ontario for CCAA National Championships

October 15, 2017

The Holland Hurricanes are in Oshawa, Ontario this week for the PING CCAA National Golf Championships at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club hosted by the Durham College Lords.

The ‘Canes are being represented by Spencer Compton (Moreall, PEI), Guillaume Côté-Généreux (Drummondville, QC), Jason Poley (Stratford, PEI), Alex Taylor (Nine Mile Creek, PEI) and Jacob Ward (Burton, NB) as the men’s team while Daria Leidenius (Panoka, AB) is playing as the Hurricanes women’s individual entry.

The tournament’s official practice round takes place on Monday at 1pm with the 72-hole event getting underway on Tuesday at 10am AST.

This season Leidenius was the ACAA individual champion while the men’s team was silver medalists. The conference championships were hosted by the Hurricanes at the Links at Crowbush Cove on September 30 and October 1; the UNB Varsity Reds won the event.

Hurricanes head coach Daniel Cudmore is pleased with the direction the team has been moving as of late.

“Our team has been preparing for this event over the past several weeks and their hard work and focus have been paying off,” he shared. “This is a new experience for these players as this is the first CCAA Nationals for four of our six travelling student-athletes. We’ve done our homework to prepare for Royal Ashburn and we’re hoping that it will give us an edge when we reach Oshawa this week.”

The men’s Hurricanes were number nine in the recent CCAA National rankings.

The ‘Canes claimed men’s national gold in 2014, silver in 2011 and bronze in 2006 while the women took home silver in 2012 and 2007.

In 2016 the Hurricanes men finished in seventh place at the event hosted by Holland College at the Fox Meadow Golf Club while Leidenius finished 23rd individually.
