Dayton and McMinns chosen as Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

Track and Field athletes Madison Dayton and Eugene McMinns have been chosen as the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 30.
Dayton, a Tourism & Travel Management student from Moncton, New Brunswick finished second at the recent 2014 Atlantic Indoor Track and Field Championship’s women’s 200 meter competition with a time of 29.99 seconds; she also finished in fourth place in the women’s 60 meter competition with a time of 8.83 seconds.
McMinns, a Sport & Leisure Management student from Nassau, Bahamas had a strong weekend at the Atlantic Indoor Track and Field Championships as well, winning the Men’s 60 meter event with a time of 7.32 seconds and also winning the Men’s 200 meter with a time of 24.01 seconds. McMinns also competed as a part of the 4 x 200 meter Men’s Relay team that finished in second place.
McMinns is also a member of the Hurricanes football team at Holland College.
Joining McMinnis and Dayton at the event was Lauris Cox, Jay Dearborn and Owen MacWilliams.
The entire team performed well in their first competition of 2014, particularly in the sprint events.
Jay Dearborn took home first place in the 400 meter competition with a time of 56.33 seconds while Lauris Cox took home two second place finishes, in the Men’s 60 meter (7.72) and the Men’s 200 meter (25.22). Owen MacWilliams finished fourth in the Men’s Shot Put event with a throw of 9.71 meters.
The Holland Hurricanes Track & Field team is in their first season of competition and will be attending other open track and field competitions throughout the spring.
