DANCE | Hurricanes preparing to compete in Fredericton
February 2, 2018
The Holland Hurricanes dance team is preparing to square off with competitive dancers from the University of New Brunswick, Dalhousie University, St. Francis Xavier University, and the Université de Moncton this weekend in Fredericton, NB.
The Hurricanes will send a record twenty-three dancers to compete in group, solo, and duet divisions. Team captain, Martha Day of Bonshaw, PEI describes the steps the Hurricanes have taken to prepare for the upcoming competition.
“Recently, we have more than doubled our practice schedule in preparing for this exciting competition. We are now focusing on the fine details of the routines in small groups to ensure we perform as well as we know we can.”
This season, the Hurricanes dance team has broadened their exposure in the community by not only performing at Hurricanes basketball and volleyball home games, but by also performing at Island Storm pro-basketball home games and a Red Rock Wrestling event in December. To date, the team has performed for a combined audience of more than 21,000 people this season.
Despite the increased visibility locally, the competition against other institutions is a way to validate the skills the team has gathered over the course of a busy season.
“With a team full of so many new members, being able to compete against other teams offers a chance to establish or maintain the standard of Hurricanes dance. The competition adds an edge to the performance and adds a sense of pressure to execute the routine as well as possible. It is an extremely valuable learning experience for our team,” explains Day.
This season, the team is entering solo and duet performers. These specialized performances offer a chance for team members to showcase their individual skills at a regional level.
As for the team’s goals, they simply want to continue to improve as a group, and continue to build a successful dance team for Holland College. Day feels, “the team has a very good chance to improve upon the results of past Hurricanes teams at competition this season. We have routines ranging from contemporary, to African-jazz, to hip-hop. We are expanding our capabilities as a group, and we are infusing our group’s unique style into our routines.”
