The Holland Hurricanes won their second straight game on Monday night when they hosted the Montague Maniacs at the Pownal Sports Centre by a score of 4-3 in overtime.

Coming off of a 5-0 victory over the Sherwood Falcons on Saturday night the Hurricanes were looking to ride the momentum into Monday’s game versus the IJHL’s second place team.

Adam Gardner, a second year Golf Club Management student opened the scoring for the Hurricanes 16:18 into the first period when he poked a loose puck into the net that was sitting in the crease. Jonny Richards and Will Connolly were credited with assists on the goal.

The second period had no scoring.

In the third the Maniacs Chris Stevenson converted 27-seconds in on the power play to tie the game 1-1. Spencer Ross and Connor Myers had the assists on the goal.

The Maniacs pressed again, scoring at 3:02 to give themselves their first lead of the game. Matt Higgins was the goal scorer assisted by Stewart Branstrom.

With the Maniacs holding the momentum the Hurricanes bounced back; finding the back of the net at 13:07 when Adam Gardner deflected a Curtis Hall shot in to tie the game 2-2. Jonny Richards was credited with the other assist.

The offensive flurry continued when the Maniacs’ Connor Myers beat goaltender Derry at 16:17 to give his team the lead with just over three minutes remaining. Assists went to Spencer Ross and Peter MacLeod.

With time ticking down and the Hurricanes trailing 3-2, Marketing and Advertising Management student Nick MacDonald fired a shot from the right circle that beat goaltender Whiffen to tie the game 3-3 with just 1:11 remaining in the game. Jonny Richards and Adam Gardner had the assists on the goal.

As the clock ticked away the teams prepared for an overtime period.

With shots exchanged at both ends of the rink the game would eventually end 2:36 in when defenceman JP Provencher rushed the puck over the Maniacs blue line and fired a shot over the shoulder of goaltender Whiffen to give the Hurricanes the 4-3 victory.

Matt Derry earned the win for the Hurricanes in goal, stopping 42 of 45 shots while Whiffen stopped 47 of the 51 Hurricanes shots in goal for the Maniacs.
