Caldwell and Derry chosen as Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

Volleyball player Emily Caldwell and hockey player Matt Derry have been chosen as the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 2.
Caldwell, a middle from Hartland, New Brunswick helped the Hurricanes earn their first ACAA win of the season last Wednesday when the ‘Canes hosted the league’s second place team, the Mount Allison Mounties.
In Wednesday’s game Caldwell had 15 digs and eight kills in the game as well as two service aces and no errors. The Hurricanes went on to defeat the Mounties in five sets in front of a rowdy home crowd at the CCE.
The ‘Canes were also in action this past weekend in Church Point, New Brunswick when they visited the Universite Sainte Anne Dragons.
In Saturday’s game Caldwell had ten kills and six digs while on Sunday she had eight kills, 14 digs and no errors. The Hurricanes lost Saturday’s game in the fifth set while losing Sunday’s match in four sets.
Caldwell is a second year Medical Assisting student.
Derry, a goaltender from Stratford, PEI and a first year Sport & Leisure Management student recorded the Hurricanes first shutout since forming in 2010 when they defeated the Falcons on Saturday night 5-0. Derry stopped 25 shots in the victory.
He also played a large part in the Hurricanes 4-3 overtime win on Monday night over the Maniacs when they won 4-3 in overtime. Derry stopped 42 of 45 shots in the victory over the league’s second place team.
In 20 games into his rookie season, the second most in the IJHL played by one goaltender, Derry has posted a 4.81 goals-against-average (third among goaltender who have played more than ten games) and one of only three shutouts in the IJHL this season.
