BBALL | Hurricanes sweep weekend matchups against STU Tommies and Dal AC Rams

The Holland College Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams picked up wins against the Tommies in Fredericton on Saturday while the men picked up a blowout win over the Rams on Sunday in Charlottetown.
On Saturday, the men’s team jumped out to an early 26-13 lead after the first quarter and would expand the lead to 49-29 at the half. The ‘Canes would outscore the Tommies 50-19 in the second half and take the game 99-48.
Five Hurricanes reached double figures in points scored with Travis Adams leading the way scoring 17 points. Chase Bowden and Jayden Nordin both added 13 while Roosevelt Whyley and Trenity Burdine added 11 and 10 respectively.
Adams would add 13 rebounds to record a double-double while Bowden also had a double-double as he hauled in 12 rebounds.
On Sunday, the ‘Canes came out flying and hit their first five shots including three three-pointers which propelled them to a 35-16 lead through one quarter of play. The lead would continue to grow with the ‘Canes leading 56-25 at half, 89-43 after three and 117-64 to win the game.
Roosevelt Whyley had 30 points including seven three-pointers in the game to lead all scorers. Trenity Burdine had a perfect shooting day making all five field goals, including three 3s, and all 11 free throws enroute to 24 points in the win.
Adams picked up his second double-double on the weekend with 16 points and 11 rebounds while also adding six assists.
The ‘Canes, the 2017 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship hosts, sit at 7-6 on the season which is good for fourth place in the league. The Tommies fall to 4-9 on the season and in sixth place while the Rams are now 2-12 and in eighth place.
The women’s team held a slim 13-10 lead after the first quarter on Saturday against the Tommies before exploding for 33 points in the second to hold a 46-23 lead at the half. After a fairly even second half, the ‘Canes would take home an 80-55 victory.
Cassie Cooke led the way with 13 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and four steals. Jayla Verney added 12 points while Darcy Zinck had 11 points to go along with seven rebounds.
The win moves the Hurricanes to 11-1 on the season, which has them tied for first in the ACAA with the MSVU Mystics. The Tommies fall to 6-5 on the season and are in third place.
The ‘Canes are on the road next weekend to take on the Mystics and UKC Blue Devils. Their next home games are February 11 when the host the UNBSJ Seawolves. The women’s game is set for 2:00 PM with the men’s game to follow at 4:00 PM.
