BBALL | Hurricanes split final regular season games against STU Tommies

The Holland Hurricanes basketball teams split their final regular season games on Saturday at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement. The women would lose 78-64 while the men picked up a 127-80 win; both games were against the STU Tommies.
In the women’s game, the ‘Canes fell behind 17-14 after the first quarter and would trail 39-29 at the half. The ‘Canes would make up some ground in the third quarter and cut the deficit to 51-45 but would lose the fourth quarter by eight points for the double digit loss.
Jayla Verney led all scorers with 15 points along with four rebounds, two assists, and four steals while Lexi MacInnis added 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block.
Keionia Beals and Kendra Craswell both reached double figures in scoring with 12 and 11 points respectively. Beals added two rebounds and two assists while Craswell had five steals and a rebound in the loss.
Tyleigha Nelson had a team-high, seven rebounds and four assists while also chipping in with a steal and a block.
With the loss the ‘Canes finish with an 11-7 record in the regular season and will finish in third place; they’ll take on the sixth place UNBSJ Seawolves in the quarterfinals this Friday in Truro, NS. The Tommies will also finish with an 11-7 record but will enter the playoffs as the fourth seed based on the ‘Canes winning the season series.
In the men’s game, the ‘Canes jumped out to an early 38-15 lead after the first quarter and would not look back. They expanded the lead to 71-39 at the half and 104-68 after three quarters before taking the fourth quarter by 11 points in the win.
Antonio Kostakos came off the bench to lead all scorers with 20 points while Jalen King also came off the bench and had 17.
Michael Kayeye led the starters with 15 points while Marcus Dawkins had 14 and Chidi Majok and Jace Colley each had 12. Kyle Lefave added 10 off the bench in the win.
Chase Bowden picked up team-highs in both rebounds with 12 and assists with four. Majok, Colley, and Greg Munroe all had six rebounds while Dawkins and Kayeye both had five assists.
Kayeye had a game-high six steals while Dawkins and King both had five and Bowden chipped in four.
The victory finishes the ‘Canes regular season at 20-1 as they enter the ACAA Championships as the number one seed. The ‘Canes will receive a bye to the semi-finals in Truro which will take place on Saturday. With the loss the Tommies finish the regular season at 4-17.
