BBALL | Hurricanes pick up road wins over STU Tommies

The Holland College Hurricanes basketball teams finished up the first semester of the season with a pair of wins over the STU Tommies on Sunday.

The women picked up a 72-59 win while the men recorded a 125-61 blowout win on the road in Fredericton, NB.

The women’s ‘Canes jumped out to a 26-10 lead after the first quarter and would lead 40-25 at the half. The Tommies managed to close the gap by two points in the second half but this is as close as they would get.

Lexi MacInnis led the ‘Canes with 20 points along with four rebounds while Tyleigha Nelson had 17 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and two blocks in the win.

Beauna Rivoli-Johnson and Ty’Keia Beals also reached double-digit figures in scoring with 12 and 11 points respectively. Rivoli-Johnson also added eight rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks.

The win moves the ‘Canes record to 4-2 which puts them in third place while the Tommies fall to 2-3 and sit in fourth.

In the men’s game the ‘Canes jumped out to a 33-16 lead after one quarter and would take a 64-31 lead into the half-time break. The ‘Canes would continue to build their lead and were up 98-40 after three quarters before coasting to the big win.

The 125 points is the second highest ever scored by a Hurricanes men’s basketball team in a single game.

Roosevelt Whyley led the ‘Canes in scoring with 25 points while also adding seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Marcus Dawkins added 23 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and three steals in the win.

Jace Colley had a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds while Kyle Lefave also reached double digits with 16 points along with five rebounds, eight assists, and two steals.

The ‘Canes will enter the break with a 6-1 record and in a 3 way tie for first place while the Tommies fall to 2-4 and are tied for fifth place.

The Hurricanes will return to action in 2018 on January 7 when they return to Fredericton to face the STU Tommies.  Their next home games take place on January 20 when they host the UKC Blue Devils at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.
