BBALL | Hurricanes perfect on the road with wins over Rams/Chargers

The Holland Hurricanes basketball teams won all three games on the road this weekend with the men winning 104-61 over the Dal AC Rams on Saturday and 106-86 over the Crandall Chargers on Sunday. The women were victorious as well on Sunday picking up a 92-61 win over the Chargers.
On Saturday, the men jumped out to a 32-14 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The lead would be increased to 55-31 at the half and 80-47 after three quarters.
Antonio Kostakos had a team high 17 points to lead a balanced attack as six players reached double digits. Roosevelt Whyley had 14 points, 12 rebounds, and a block in the win for the ‘Canes while other players to reach double digits were Jalen King (14), Kyle Lefave (13), Connor Therrien (11), and Jace Colley (10).
The ‘Canes had 17 assists and 17 steals with eight players contributing at least one assist and nine players with at least one steal.
On Sunday, the ‘Canes would rally from a 31-20 deficit after the first quarter to win by 20 points and get some payback for their lone loss earlier this season on November 26. The ‘Canes took a 47-45 lead into the half-time break and would extend their lead to 75-59 through three quarters.
The pair of wins improves the ‘Canes record to 8-1 on the season which puts them in second place in the ACAA standings. They are just two points behind Mount Allison with the ‘Canes having played one less game at this point in the season. The Rams are 0-11 after the weekend loss while the Chargers drop to 8-2 on the season.
In the women’s game on Sunday, the ‘Canes led 23-17 after the first and 54-35 at the half. A low scoring third quarter for both teams pushed the Hurricanes lead to 69-44.
Lexi MacInnis and Jayla Verney both had double-doubles in the win with MacInnis recording 18 points, ten rebounds, two assists, three steals, and one block while Verney finished with 17 points, ten rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Alyssa Canning added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench while Breauna Rivoli-Johnson stuffed the stats sheet with nine points, five rebounds, seven assists, four steals, and one block.
The win moves the ‘Canes to 5-2 on the season which has them in third place in the ACAA while the Chargers fall to 0-9 on the season.
The Hurricanes return home this weekend when they host the UKC Blue Devils on back-to-back days at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.
On Saturday games take place at 4 and 6pm with the action continuing on Sunday at 12 and 2pm (w/m). The UKC men sit at 2-8 this season and are in seventh while the women are 4-5 and in fourth.
