BBALL | Hurricanes men and women advance to ACAA Championship games

Two wins on Saturday in ACAA semi-final action for the men’s and women’s Hurricanes have put them in the ACAA Championship games on Sunday in Sackville, NB.
The Hurricanes women defeated the STU Tommies on Saturday afternoon by a score of 79-57 punching their ticket to an ACAA Championship matchup on Sunday at 1pm versus the MSVU Mystics.
Due to the ACAA holding a wildcard position for the 2017 CCAA National Women’s Basketball Championship, both the Hurricanes and Mystics will represent the conference at this years National Championship in Edmonton, Alberta March 15-18.
On Saturday, the Hurricanes led 20-19 after the first quarter, 36-34 at half and 57-44 after the third.
Jayla Verney led the way offensively for the Hurricanes with 31 points while Cassie Cooke was strong all over the court with the triple-double (11 rebounds, 10 assists and 11 points). Darcy Zinck was the other Hurricanes player with double-digit point totals with 14.
The Mystics advanced to the conference championship game with a 65-53 semi-final victory on Saturday versus the Mount Allison Mounties.
In head-to-head action this season with the Mystics the Hurricanes lead the season series 2-1.
The men’s Hurricanes survived a battle with the MSVU Mystics on Saturday, picking up the win by a score of 76-65. The victory puts the Hurricanes in the ACAA Championship game on Sunday at 3:30pm versus the winner of the Crandall Chargers/Mount Allison Mounties semi-final taking place Saturday night.
The Hurricanes, hosts of the 2017 CCAA National Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlottetown on March 15-18, will welcome the winner of the Chargers/Mounties game as the ACAA representative in the national tournament.
The Hurricanes trailed 16-10 after the first quarter on Saturday but tied things up at half 30-30. The ‘Canes slowly pulled away in the second half leading 53-48 after the third.
