February 23, 2018

This Saturday the men’s and women’s basketball Hurricanes will host the St. Thomas Tommies for a pair of games at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown; it will be the final regular season games for the Hurricanes in 2017-18.

The women will start the day at 2pm with the men playing at 4pm.

The women’s Hurricanes enter Saturday at 11-6 and in third place in the ACAA while the Tommies are 10-7 and in fourth.

Regardless of the outcome on Saturday the ‘Canes will enter the playoffs in third, having won the series over STU this season by scores of 72-59 and 83-72 on December 3 and January 24.

The ‘Canes will face the sixth ranked UNBSJ Seawolves in an ACAA quarterfinal game on Friday, March 2 in Truro, NS.

Entering the weekend Ty’keia Beals leads the ACAA with a three-point shooting percentage of 43.6% while Breauna Rivoli-Johnson leads the conference in the assists and steals per game categories.

The women’s Hurricanes have battled adversity near the end of the regular season with heavy injury problems; they’ll have to dig deep this weekend in front of their home fans.

The men’s Hurricanes head into the weekend at 19-1 and lead the ACAA standings. The STU Tommies sit in a tie for sixth at 4-16; the Hurricanes have won the only two matchups with the Tommies this season.

The ‘Canes will enter the ACAA Championships next weekend as the number one seed and will receive a bye to the semi-finals while the Tommies are in a must-win situation to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Entering the weekend, Marcus Dawkins leads the ACAA with his 53.4% three-point shooting percentage.

This Saturday will also be “Kidz Day” at the Centre for Community Engagement.

Kids will receive free admission to both games and there will also be face painting, noisemakers, photos with Hurricanes players, a colouring contest, mascots, giveaways and more for those in attendance.
