BBALL | Hurricanes hit the road for crucial games in Halifax

The Hurricanes, the 2017 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship hosts, enter play at 7-6 and in fourth place in the ACAA. The men will take on the conference leading 13-1 Mystics and fifth place Blue Devils who are 5-10.
The ‘Canes are currently number ten in the CCAA National Men’s Basketball rankings.
The ‘Canes currently lead the ACAA in points per game averaging over 100 points this season. The men also lead the ACAA in field goal percentage, three-point percentage, rebounds per game, assists per game, steals per game and blocks per game.
Individually, the ‘Canes are led by Trenity Burdine who currently leads the conference with 20.3 points per game while Roosevelt Whyley is sitting third at 18.3 points per game.
On the women’s side, the ‘Canes enter play ranked fourth in the country by the CCAA with an 11-1 record which has them tied for first in the conference with the Mystics; MSVU are ranked number six in the CCAA. The Blue Devils enter weekend play at 5-8 which has them fifth in the ACAA.
The ‘Canes currently lead the conference in points per game, assists per game and three-point percentage, while sitting second in fewest points allowed per game, blocks per game, steals per game and field goal percentage.
The Mystics enter play leading the conference in fewest points allowed per game, steals per game and field goal percentage while sitting second in rebounds per game, assists per game and points per game.
Individually, the ‘Canes are led by Jayla Verney who is averaging a league leading 18.4 points per game while Darcy Zinck sits just outside the top ten with 10.4. Both the Mystics and Blue Devils also have two players in the top 12 in scoring.
The ‘Canes and Mystics have split the first two matchups of the season with the Mystics winning in Halifax on November 13 (77-43) and the ‘Canes winning in Charlottetown on January 15 (78-55). The winner of the game takes the season series and will be in the driver’s seat for the number one seed in the playoffs.
The ‘Canes took the only matchup from the Blue Devils this year with a win on November 12 in Halifax by a score of 74-55.
The women’s game will tip-off at 2:00 PM on Saturday with the men’s game to follow at 4:00 PM. On Sunday, the women will tip-off at 12:00 PM while the men will play at 2:00 PM.
