Basketball Hurricanes travel to STU for big games with Tommies on Saturday
November 8, 2013
The Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams are on the road this Saturday when they visit the STU Tommies in Fredericton. Both Holland College teams began their ACAA regular seasons last weekend with big victories over the Dal-AC Rams.
The Hurricanes women will be in action first on Saturday with tip-off at 2 pm versus the 1-0 Tommies. This promises to be an entertaining game as both teams have recently been ranked in CCAA’s top ten national rankings; the Tommies in at number two while the Hurricanes sit in tenth. The two teams are the only ranked teams from the ACAA in the top fifteen.
“I am so excited and ready to play this weekend! It’s a huge weekend for me and the ‘Canes! I believe not only does talent and hard work win games but also team defense, support from one another, staying focused and staying together. All it takes is team work and we will be successful” shared rookie guard Menny Smith.
Both teams were on the receiving end of dominating victories in their season openers; the Hurricanes defeating the Rams 85-31 while the Tommies defeated the Crandall Chargers 103-7.
“We were able to stay focused as a team and come out strong on defense from the beginning of the game to the end. When we create that type of pressure and work together it automatically transitions into great offense for us where we get good looks and everybody is involved”, shared second year player Lisa Edwards.
The men’s game is scheduled to begin at 4 pm and will feature the 1-0 Hurricanes taking on the 0-1 Tommies. This is the first time these two times have met since last season’s ACAA championship game which seen the Hurricanes defeat the host Tommies en route to a birth to the CCAA championships in Montreal. Ultimately the Hurricanes went on to fall in the gold medal game, taking home the programs first ever national medal in the process. Relive the journey here.
“Our team is really looking forward to returning to Lady Beaverbrook and facing St. Thomas for the first time this season. It’s a great opportunity to set the tone for the new year and we will look to do just that on Saturday” shared team captain and Summerside, PEI native Steve Hardy.
The Hurricanes defeated the Dal-AC Rams last Saturday by a score of 108-40 while the Tommies fell to the nationally ranked Crandall Chargers 71-57. The Hurricanes are currently ranked at number three in the CCAA’s national rankings while the Chargers were positioned at number eleven. The two teams are the only ranked teams from the ACAA in the top fifteen.
First year head coach Josh Whitty had this to say about the weekend games.
“STU has been one of the best teams in the ACAA over the past few seasons. We’re looking forward to a big test on the road, early in the season. We had a good week in practice, so we’ll be looking to carry that into Saturday’s game.”
