Baseball Hurricanes impress at baseball Nationals, fall in semis
October 31, 2016
It was an intense week of baseball in Oshawa, ON as the Hurricanes challenged the top men’s teams from the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association at the first ever men’s baseball college national championship. The ‘Canes ultimately fell in the semi-finals to the champions from the OCAA, the St. Clair College Saints.
After an opening game win over the John Abbott College Islanders on Friday by a score of 17-0 the Hurricanes were handed a loss at the hands of the host Durham College Lords 4-1.
Due to Thursday’s opening day schedule being rained out the Hurricanes opener versus the Fanshawe College Falcons was actually their third game of the tournament and played on Saturday. After both teams scored runs in the opening inning it would be the Falcons who would take the victory in extra innings by a score of 2-1; this forced the Hurricanes into a tiebreaker game with the Humber Hawks who shared a 1-2 record through the round robin.
Saturday evening saw the ‘Canes and Hawks play quality baseball for seven innings as the Hurricanes took home the 2-0 victory off of a big-time pitching performance by Colby Lyle. The win advanced them to the semi-final game on Sunday morning versus the undefeated St. Clair Saints.
After a home run in the fifth inning by ‘Canes outfielder Josh McDonald the Saints would bounce back with a single run of their own the very next inning. After both teams threatened to score runs the game ultimately ended when the Saints secured the walk off win in the bottom of the seventh off of a single with the bases loaded.
The Fanshawe College Falcons eventually won the national championship game 2-1 over the St. Clair Saints.
Three Hurricanes players were named to the National All-Tournament team. Jesse Holman (catcher), Jay Oram (shortstop) and Josh McDonald (outfielder) were noticed for their outstanding play in the event.
The Hurricanes went 14-2 in regional play this season.
It is expected that this event will be held in Oshawa, ON again in 2017 as the CCAA and it’s member conferences continue to develop men’s baseball at the Canadian collegiate level.
