Baseball Hurricanes hitting the road for Nationals
October 26, 2016
The Holland College Hurricanes Baseball team is travelling to Oshawa, Ontario for the 2016 Canadian College National Invitational Baseball Championship hosted by the Durham College Lords.
The tournament is set to begin on Thursday, October 27th, with the playoffs set for Saturday, October 29th.
The ‘Canes first game is set for Thursday night at 8:00 PM AST against the Fanshawe College Falcons (London, ON). The Falcons were the OCAA silver medalists this year.
The ‘Canes will then play two games on Friday. The first being at 10:00 AM AST against the John Abbott College Islanders (Montreal, QC) and their second taking place at 8:00 PM AST against the host Durham College Lords.
The Islanders lost in the RSEQ semi-finals this year, as did the Lords in the OCAA; the Lords lost to the eventual OCAA champions from the St. Clair College.
The Hurricanes expect to see Brady Arsenault start game one on the mound while Logan Dowe and Colby Lyle are probable starters for games two and three.
The other two teams at the tournament are the St. Clair College Saints (Windsor, ON) and the Humber College Hawks (Toronto, ON).
Veteran infielder Dillon Doucette is ready to take advantage of the opportunity to play against the CCAA’s best.
“We look forward to the challenge ahead of us as we hope to build off of last season’s national final appearance. We have had great preparation up to this point so now it’s just a matter of executing our game plan and being ready when called upon.”
If necessary a tie-breaker will be played at 10 AM AST on Saturday before two semi-finals at 1 PM AST and eventually the National Championship game at 6 PM AST to end the tournament.
The Hurricanes completed a 14-1 season at the regional level and enter the championship coming off of a National silver medal in 2015.
“We’re excited once again to compete for a national championship. Our team is very grateful for this opportunity and we look to build quick momentum early on and utilize our roster depth to go deep into this tournament,” shared third-year head coach Andrew MacNevin.
The event is open to members of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and is the first of it’s kind. For more tournament information please visit www.durhamlords.com.
