Barrett and Parker chosen as Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

Basketball players Janea Barrett and Alvin Parker have been chosen as the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 2.
Barrett, a first year Sport & Leisure Management student from Toronto, Ontario helped the Hurricanes earn an ACAA silver medal and advance to the CCAA women’s basketball nationals in Quebec next week with her outstanding play.
In Saturdays semi-final game against the MSVU Mystics Barrett led the Hurricanes, scoring 28 points and had nine rebounds in the 85-59 victory. In Sunday’s gold medal game she would add 11 points and four rebounds in a 66-49 loss.
On Friday evening Barrett was also named an ACAA 2nd Team All-Star; Barrett joined the Hurricanes in January.
The women’s Hurricanes finished their regular season with a 19-2 record and are currently ranked as the sixth best team in the country by the CCAA. They will travel to Quebec next week for the CCAA women’s basketball nationals where they will play their first game at 7:30pm (Atlantic Time) on Thursday versus the Algonquin Thunder from Ottawa Ontario, the third ranked team in the tournament.
Parker, a guard from Baltimore, Maryland, USA played a key role in the Hurricanes ACAA Championship victory this past weekend; this was their second straight ACAA Championship.
On Friday the Hurricanes took on the UKC Blue Devils in a quarter-final game which seen Parker score 15 points en route to a 105-59 victory. The Hurricanes continued to roll in Saturday’s semi-final game versus the second ranked MSVU Mystics, going on to win 87-68; Parker would score 15 points in the game and had six rebounds.
In Sunday’s championship game, their third game in three days, Alvin scored 28 points to lead the Hurricanes to an 88-74 victory over the top ranked Crandall Chargers to earn their second straight ACAA Championship.
Parker was also named to the ACAA’s 1st Team All-Star team on Friday night at the annual ACAA basketball awards banquet.
The Hurricanes finished their regular season with a 17-4 record and entered the playoffs as the ACAA’s third ranked team.
The Hurricanes will travel to British Columbia next week to compete in the CCAA national men’s basketball championships ranked as fifth best team in the country; they will take on the Vanier Cheetahs Thursday at 5:00pm (Atlantic Time).
