BAD | Hurricanes tie for third in recent ACAA competition

The Holland Hurricanes finished in a tie for third place in the ACAA badminton competition over the weekend hosted by the UKC Blue Devils in Halifax, NS.

The five team field had competitors from Dal AC, Mount Allison, Holland College, UKC and the Université de Sainte-Anne with the Mounties winning the event by 23 points over the host Blue Devils. The Hurricanes tied with the USA Dragons in third place while the Dal AC Rams would finish in fifth.

The ‘Canes would win the men’s doubles “B” competition with the strong play from Jonah Wilton and Connor Loerick as they were perfect in all four of their matches.  They earned ten points towards the Hurricanes team total.

The following three players would pick up seven points each for the ‘Canes by finishing in second in their respective competitions, each going 3-1.  Emma Hughes in women’s singles “A”, Wilton in men’s singles “A” and Matt Barlow in men’s singles “B”.

Hughes and Loerick would finish in third in mixed doubles “A” while David Cozens and Barlow would finish in third in men’s doubles “A”; each team would earn five points for the Hurricanes going 2-2.

The ‘Canes did not participate in the women’s doubles “A”, mixed doubles “B”, women’s singles “B” and women’s doubles “B” so did not receive any points in those competitions.

This is the third straight event the ‘Canes have finished in third place.

Next up for Holland College is an event hosted by the Dal AC Rams on Saturday in Truro, NS followed by a competition on February 3 in Sackville, NB hosted by the Mount Allison Mounties.

The Hurricanes will host the 2018 ACAA Championships on February 17-18 at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown, PEI.
