BAD | Emma Hughes wins ACAA Rookie and Player of the Year awards

Tonight at the 2017 ACAA Badminton Awards banquet in Halifax, NS, Hurricanes first year player Emma Hughes was presented with two prestigious awards, the ACAA Rookie of the Year as well as the ACAA Player of the Year.
Hughes, from Summerside, PEI, in her first year in the Culinary Arts program, finished the season with a 35-5 record in singles (17-3), doubles (16-0 all with partner Kristyn Visser) and mixed doubles (2-2) action.
“Emma is a very dedicated player. She takes the sport very seriously and has an incredible amount of concentration on the court; she always keeps her cool and focus,” shared head coach Mary Côté.
“She takes pride in her play as well as academic achievements. She is a great team player and fun to be around.”
The Hurricanes competed in the ACAA Championship on Saturday to a third place finish.
The ‘Canes excelled in women’s doubles finishing with a 4-0 record and men’s doubles finishing 3-1. Women’s singles finished 2-2 while men’s singles and mixed doubles struggled to 0-3 and 0-4 records respectively.
Competing players for the ‘Canes this weekend are females Hughes, Kristyn Visser, Juana Zhang, Maggie Renouf and males Josh Watkins, Jonah Wilton, David Cozens and Larry Liang.
The Mount Allison Mounties were the eventual champions with the UKC Blue Devils finishing in second.
The Hurricanes will take part in the CCAA National Championships qualifier on Sunday beginning at 9am, also in Halifax hosted by the Blue Devils. Joining the Hurricanes are teams from Mount Allison, UKC, Dal AC and the Universite de Sainte-Anne.
