AOTW | Marques and Whyley named Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

Women’s volleyball player Alice Marques and men’s basketball player Roosevelt Whyley have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 22.

Marques, a fourth year right side hitter from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in her first year with the Hurricanes, had a pair of impressive performances this weekend as the ‘Canes split their matches with the MSVU Mystics and Mount Allison Mounties.

On Saturday, in a 3-2 loss to the Mystics, Marques recorded 18 kills, 11 digs, two blocks and 19 points. The 18 kills tied her for the second most in a single match in Hurricanes women’s volleyball team history.

On Sunday, in a 3-1 win over the Mounties, Marques recorded an amazing 25 kills along with one assist, one ace, four digs, two blocks and 27.5 points. The 25 kills and 27.5 points are both single game records for the Hurricanes women’s volleyball team history.

Marques currently studies in the Sport & Leisure Management program.

The women’s volleyball ‘Canes will be on the road next Saturday as they travel to Fredericton to take on the STU Tommies at 6:00 PM; they play their next home game on February 1 at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement versus the Mounties at 7pm.

Whyley, a third year forward from Nassau, Bahamas, in his second year with the Hurricanes, led the ‘Canes to a pair of victories over the UNBSJ Seawolves on the weekend.

On Saturday, in a 107-56 win, Whyley recorded a double-double with 30 points and ten rebounds along with one assist and four steals.

On Sunday, in a 106-84 win, Whyley scored 24 points while also contributing five rebounds, four assist and four steals.

Whyley currently studies in the Sport & Leisure Management program.

The Hurricanes, the 2017 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship hosts, will be on the road this Saturday as they take on the STU Tommies in Fredericton at 3:00 PM before returning home to take on the Dal AC Rams at 3:00 PM at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement on Sunday, January 29.
