AOTW | MacInnis and Whyley named Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

Basketball players Lexi MacInnis and Roosevelt Whyley have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 4.

MacInnis, a first year guard from Stratford, PEI, was named the ACAA Rookie of the Year on Friday prior to the ACAA Basketball Championships in Truro, NS. This season in the ACAA, MacInnis finished third in total points (259) and defensive rebounds per game (5.4), fourth in three point shooting percentage (39.8%) and total rebounds (123) and fifth in rebounds per game (6.8).

On Friday she helped the Hurricanes advance to the semi-finals with a 61-57 victory over the UNBSJ Seawolves in quarter-final action. In the win she scored 14 points, nine rebounds, two assists and one steal.

In Saturday’s semi-final game versus the Mount Allison Mounties, MacInnis scored 14 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal in a 65-44 loss.

MacInnis is studying in the Bioscience program at Holland College.

Whyley, a fourth year forward from Nassau, Bahamas, was named to the ACAA first All-Conference team over the weekend.

In Saturday’s 93-79 semi-final victory over the MSVU Mystics, Whyley scored ten points, four rebounds, two assist and two steals before adding 25 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 100-64 win on Sunday over the Crandall Chargers to claim their sixth straight ACAA Championship.

This season Whyley led the ACAA in rebounds (9.6) and offensive rebounds (3.9) per game, was second in total rebounds (198) and third in defensive rebounds per game (6.1).  He currently sits in second in career points scored for the men’s basketball Hurricanes (1103) as well as career rebounds (542).

Whyley studies in the Sport & Leisure Management program.

The men’s Hurricanes will depart for Laval, PQ next week when they compete in the 2018 CCAA National Men’s Basketball Championship hosted by the Nomades de Montmorency. The ‘Canes will begin the tournament on Thursday, March 15 at 4:30pm AST versus the Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf.
