AOTW | Hughes/Visser and Cozens/Liang named Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

Women’s badminton duo Emma Hughes and Kristyn Visser and men’s badminton players David Cozens and Larry Liang have been named Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 20.

Hughes, from Summerside PEI and Visser, from South Winsloe, PEI, teamed up on the weekend to win the women’s doubles national qualifying event in Halifax. The pair will represent the Hurricanes and ACAA at Seneca College in Toronto, ON March 8-11 at the CCAA National Badminton Championships.

On Saturday night in Halifax, before the qualifying began, Hughes was named the ACAA women’s Player and Rookie of the Year.

Hughes went 15-1 in women’s singles during the regular season and teamed with Visser to go 20-0 in regular season women’s doubles play; she was 2-2 in mixed doubles competition. Her season record heading into nationals is 43-5.

Visser will be attending her second CCAA Nationals of the year as she was also a part of the women’s soccer team that went to Nationals in early November.

Hughes currently studies in the Culinary Arts program while Visser currently studies in the Primary Care Paramedicine program.

Cozens, from Cornwall, PEI, and Liang from China, represented the Hurricanes in men’s doubles at the national qualifying event in Halifax on Sunday.

Cozens and Liang had an impressive run and found themselves in a three-way tie for first place before losing to Mount Allison in the playoff. Cozens and Liang teamed up for most of the regular season events this season for the Hurricanes.

Cozens currently studies in the Accounting Technology program while Liang currently studies in the Adult Ed program.

Other Hurricanes badminton players competing at Sunday’s event who were unable to qualify for nationals were Maggie Renouf (women’s singles, 1-2, 3rd place), Jonah Wilton & Juang Zhang (mixed doubles, 0-4, 5th place) and Josh Watkins (men’s singles, 1-2, 3rd place).
