AOTW | Hughes and Barlow named Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

Badminton players Emma Hughes and Matt Barlow have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 18.
Hughes and Barlow, both from Summerside, PEI, qualified to represent the Hurricanes and the ACAA at the 2018 CCAA National Badminton Championships in Edmonton, AB, February 28-March 3.
Hughes, a second year player with the Hurricanes in the Pastry Arts program, went 3-0 on Sunday to earn her spot at nationals in the women’s singles category. She defeated players from the UKC Blue Devils, Mount Allison Mounties and Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons, losing only a single set along the way.
On Saturday, she led the ‘Canes to a third place finish in the ACAA Championship when she finished in second in the women’s singles category with a 2-1 record.
Last year she attended the CCAA Nationals in the women’s doubles category with her playing partner, Kristyn Visser.
Barlow, a first year player for the ‘Canes, is studying in the Business Administration program.
He went 4-0 on Sunday to qualify for nationals in the men’s singles competition after defeating players from USA, UKC, Dal AC and Mount Allison. Over those four matches he lost just two sets.
Representing the ACAA alongside Hughes and Barlow at the CCAA National Badminton Championships are Sam White and Sam Lowther (UKC) in mixed doubles, Olivia Adams and Suzuha Tanaka (MTA) in women’s doubles and Benn Van Ryn and Bryce Mason (UKC) in men’s doubles.
